A Tribute to William Morris and Life
”A Tribute to William Morris and Life” is a triptych based on one of William Morris’s most famous wallpapers, ”Trellis”. It was part of the exhibition ”Between Art and Craft” at Studio 44 in Stockholm autumn 2025.
William Morris reacted to the soulless, mass-produced objects of the Industrial Revolution. I react to the destructive world that surrounds us. Most of us humans want to live in peace, with kindness and concern and in harmony with nature. This must become ”the New Arts and Crafts movement”.
Material/technique: Triptych, vinyl on watercolor paper
Approx. 64 x 115 cm. Year: 2025
The exhibition was a collaboration between artists and craftsmen where the border between art and craft was explored and placed in a contemporary context. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, we wanted to highlight in the exhibition how changes in today’s society affect and shift craft practices in relation to the more conceptual direction of contemporary art.
The Arts and Crafts movement was an artistic and social movement in Great Britain that, initially inspired by the writings of John Ruskin, was most influential between 1880 and 1910. The Arts and Crafts movement was a response to the Industrial Revolution. As a reaction to the soulless, mass-produced objects of the Industrial Revolution, the Arts and Crafts movement advocated decoration and beauty, creating useful and beautiful objects.
In today’s society, the changes consist of AI taking over more and more of the artistic work, environmental alarms about growing commodity mountains and harmful manufacturing processes, and unsustainable handling of end-of-life objects. In pre-industrial society, the long time it took for a product to be produced was a challenge. In today’s post-industrial society, far too many products are mass-produced in far too short a time. At the same time, new studies show that the work of the hand has a crucial role in the development of the brain. This means that the ideas of the Arts and Craft movement have been re-emerged.
